Mike Conway

Associate Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator, California University of Pennsylvania

Mike Conway finished his fourth season as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the California Vulcans. Under Conway’s direction, the Vulcans have ranked among the top 25 in NCAA Division II in total defense three times in the last four years, forging a new tradition of defensive dominance and excitement for the future of California football.

Originally from Brashear, Pa., Conway received his undergraduate degree in sociology and communications from Olivet Nazarene University (1983) and his Master’s Degree in Health Education from Penn State University (1992). Conway was a two-time All-American offensive lineman at Olivet Nazarene and played professionally in the CFL, USFL and NFL before a back injury forced his early retirement.

Conway’s coaching career started at Washington & Jefferson College in 1984. He served as the Presidents’ defensive coordinator for 10 years, helping to compile a 98-8-1 record, which included two berths in the NCAA Division III Championship Game.

In 1995, Conway went at Purdue University for one season before taking on the challenge of rebuilding Olivet Nazarene’s program as the head coach. In four seasons, he guided ONU to a 31-14 overall record, including winning records all four years and a trip to the NAIA National Championship game in 1998.

The next three seasons, Conway coached the defensive line at Arkansas State University, served as Associate Head Coach at Geneva College and was the Head Coach at Southwestern College in Kansas before rejoining forces with his long-time mentor John Luckhardt at Cal U.

“Mike is the soul of our program,” Luckhardt said. “He is the catalyst that ignites the chain reaction at Cal U. “His intensity permeates the defensive unit. Mike is one of the finest defensive coaches in the country.”

Coach Conway and his wife Beth reside in California, Pa., with their two sons, Dakota (13) and T. D. (11).
