Putting a New “Spin” on the 3-5 Defense

The craze of high school and small college football today is the 3-5 defense. There are a plethora of possibilities that can be employed when you have 5 second-level players. Unfortunately, this versatile defense is sometimes left as a plain shell with three linebackers stacked directly behind three linemen.

In most situations, defensive coordinators maintain this defense as a balanced defense, which is one of its strengths. However, the majority of the game is played on the hash or close to it, rarely in the middle of the field.

At Lake City High School, it has been our need to take away the wide field, especially on third down and long.

Many teams that we face have a tendency to sprint out to the wide field on third down. We were not getting the pressure that we wanted, nor the coverage we wanted on the sprint out pass, while running the base one-high safety look. ...
