SWAT Series Part 6:
2 Lock Coverage
Gino Arcaro
CLN Consultant, Head coach, Niagara X-Men

I. SHRINK AND EXTEND
SWAT 2 Lock is a defensive concept, not a singular formation/coverage.

It is a family/cluster of convertible coverages and pressure that includes two double-crew shells (2-deep, 2-low) for the dual purpose of:
i) shrinking the stretch, and
ii) extending the pass

SWAT 2 Lock has three interdependent goals:
i) close all stretch play running lanes,
ii) eliminate the tight end as an option/hot read, and
iii) force the offense to hold the ball longer and throw the ball deeper.

These strategic goals are not mutually exclusive. The first two have to occur in sequence for the third to emerge. Force the offense to put the ball in the air and force them to throw deep. This is the best way to achieve the defensive objective of 2 Pís - points and possession (SWAT Series Part V: Defensive Coordinator Ideology).

The primary aim is to make the offense fail at the stretch play and then fail at completing passes to the tight end. If the stretch play is not stopped, the rest of the chain collapses - nothing else will matter - and the opposing offense will score often. ...
