Teaching Routes: Inside Receivers

The inside receiver has to be a good athlete who can read coverages. Almost every route he runs he must make some kind of an adjustment based on finding an open area or by altering his route to the coverage.

The inside receiver routes are usually coordinated with the receiver to his outside. On most of the pass plays the inside receiver will either be opening a zone for the outside receiver or he will be taking advantage of zone opened by the outside receiver.

The inside receiver must be the kind of athlete that provides match-up problems for the defense because of his quickness and his ability to run after the catch. Here are the inside receiver routes with key coaching points:

Hitch: Split the difference between the end man on the line of scrimmage and the outside receiver. Use an inside release. Run the route 7 yards back to 5 yards. Let the Scuff player buzz under #1.
