Mike Kellar

Offensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator, California University of Pennsylvania

Mike Kellar was named the Offensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator for the Cal. U. Vulcans in 2004. In 2005 the Vulcans went 8-2 and captured the PSAC West title, their first title since 1984. In addition, the Vulcans had the NCAA II 7th ranked scoring (42.1 ppg), 11th ranked total (462.4 ypg), and 17th ranked rushing offense (226.1) en route to setting a school record for scoring (421).

Kellar’s play calling featured running back Antoine Bagwell, who was named A.P. second-team All America and PSAC West offensive player of the year for the second straight year and is the first Cal player ever invited to the Hula Bowl. Bagwell was third in the nation in scoring (15.2), fifth in the nation in rushing (158.8) and total offense (206.2). In 20 games with Kellar he has rushed for 3,353 yards and scored 45 touchdowns.

In 2004 the Vulcans boasted the No. 2-ranked offense in the PSAC in total offense and scoring and Bagwell was the nation’s second leading rusher with 1,765 yards.

Originally from Shinnston, W.Va., Kellar was a starting quarterback at Glenville State, then transferred to Fairmont State, where he started his senior season. Kellar received his undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts in 1996. A year later, he received his Master’s Degree in Safety Management from West Virginia University.

After completing his collegiate career, he joined the Fairmont State coaching staff and spent eight years with the Falcons. During that tenure, as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Fairmont State won a pair of West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in 1996 and 2000.

In 2001, the Falcons led the WVIAC in total offense (449.4 yards per game) and passing offense (292.2 yards per game). His quarterback that year, Bryan Harman, repeated as the WVIAC Player of the Year, led the conference in total offense (335.7 yards per game, 3rd in the nation) and passing offense (284.4 yards per game).

Kellar moved to Northern Michigan University as the Offensive Coordinator in 2002. That season NMU set the school record for passing attempts, completions, and yards. Kellar’s protégé, quarterback Kyle Swenor, led the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in passing and total yards.

In 2003, Kellar led the Wildcat offense to a second place finish in total offense amassing 422.4 yards per game and pass offense tallying 288.2 yards per game in the GLIAC Conference. Kellar’s passing attack produced the school’s first 1,000-yard receiver.

“The addition of Mike Kellar has brought the positive leadership needed for the offense to be successful,” said Cal head coach John Luckhardt. “Mike has made an immediate impact on our quarterbacks and receivers. With the confidence he has instilled, combined with the talent that we have, the Vulcans will continue to be more productive and exciting to watch.”

Kellar and his wife Melissa reside in Belle Vernon and have four children, Diedra (12), Jarrod (9), Anthony (6) and Jacob (4).
