Mike Evans

Offensive Line Coach/Strength Coordinator
California University of Pennsylvania

Mike Evans was named the Vulcan offensive line coach and strength coordinator in 2003. He is also coordinating the redesigning of the athletic weight room and updating the equipment.

Under his direction, the offensive line has been equally adapt in the run and passing games. In 2004 the offense racked up 2,333 yard rushing and 2,127 yards passing, while in 2005 the offense gained 2,261 yards on the ground and 2,363 through the air. Cal set a school record for scoring in 2005 with 421 points.

The offensive line led the way for two time A.P. second-team All America and PSAC West offensive player of the year running back Antoine Bagwell, who is the first Cal player ever invited to the Hula Bowl. In 2005 Bagwell was third in the nation in scoring (15.2), fifth in the nation in rushing (158.8) and total offense (206.2). In 20 games at Cal he has rushed for 3,353 yards and scored 45.

Originally from Peter’s Township, Pa., Evans was a three-year starting offensive lineman at Mercyhurst College after transferring from the University of Akron, where he started as a red-shirt freshman. Evans also attended Shippensburg University for one year. His senior season he played in the Snow Bowl, the Division II All-Star Game, and earned Football Gazette Division II All-American honors at left tackle.

Evans coaching career began at Berkshire High School in Burton, Ohio, where he served as line and strength and conditioning coach. He moved to the collegiate level in 1999 as a student assistant at Saginaw Valley State University, working with tight ends and tackles.

In 2000, he began a three-year run as the offensive line coach as well as the strength and conditioning coach at SVSU. Under Evans, the SVSU Cardinals produced two All-Americans and seven All-Conference players. In 2002, the Cardinals featured a potent offense that finished first in the GLIAC in passing offense and second in the conference in total offense.

“Mike is an enthusiastic and positive coach,” said Cal head coach John Luckhardt. “He is a great technical teacher and his influence will continue to raise the bar for the offensive line.”
